THEORY TO PRACTICE, ISSUE NO. 2, FALL '10

This July, the National Center for Education Statistics released the following facts about America's population. 

  • In 2007, about 14 percent of the U.S. population was born outside of the country, including 69 percent of Asians and 44 percent of Hispanics. 
  • From 2001-2008, the percentage of Hispanic students enrolled in U.S. schools increased from 17 to 21 percent. 
  • In 2007, about 69 percent of Hispanic and 64 percent of Asian elementary and secondary school students spoke a language other than English at home.  
  • In 2007, nine percent of 6-to 21-year-olds were served by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, including 14 percent of American Indians and Alaskan natives, the largest minority population served by IDEA.
