2011 Edu/StatsThis year, the National Center for Education Statistics released the following facts about America’s population.

  • Public school systems will employ about 3.2 million teachers this fall, resulting in a pupil/teacher ratio of 15.5.
  • From 1999–2000 to 2008–09, the number of students enrolled in public charter schools more than tripled from 340,000 to 1.4 million students. In 2008-09, some 5 percent of all public schools were charter schools.
  • Public elementary and secondary schools will spend about $525 billion for the 2011–12 school year—or $10,591 per student.
  • There were three students per computer with Internet access in 2008, compared with seven students per computer with Internet access in 2000.
