Dr. Van Norman's research focuses on data-based decision making within multi-tiered systems of support. He researches universal screening practices that help educators identify students at-risk for academic difficulties. He also researches methods to measure student progress and determine response to academic and behavioral interventions. Van Norman leverages advanced statistical techniques (e.g., structural equation modeling; receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, monte-carlo simulation, latent profile analysis, multi-level and longitudinal modeling) in R to conduct applied psychometric research to evaluate the technical adequacy of common tests including curriculum-based measures (CBMs) and computer adaptive tests (CATs). He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of School Psychology, Statistical Methodological Consultant for School Psychology and School Psychology Review, and serves on the editorial board for Assessment for Effective Intervention. He was the 2021 winner of the Lightner Witmer early career research award from Division 16 of the American Psychological Association and winner of the 2023 Libsch early career research award from Lehigh University. Van Norman frequently collaborates with local school districts and non-profit educational agencies in his work and is interested in training graduate students interested in pursuing careers in research and academia.
