Dr. Brook Sawyer weighs in on full-day kindergarten in the Lehigh Valley

Studies show full-day kindergarten helps students coming from low socioeconomic homes. Research is less clear on the impact to already high-achieving students, said Brook Sawyer, an assistant professor at Lehigh University's College of Education. Still, Sawyer said, there's a practical advantage to full-day kindergarten, too. "It's a real advantage because with school districts moving to Pennsylvania Common Core, it's very challenging for teachers to try to meet those standards in a school day that's [two]-and-a-half hours long that also includes lunch and specials areas," Sawyer said.
