Student Spotlight: Molly Ruiz

For Molly Ruiz, pursuing a doctorate at Lehigh University is both a major professional milestone and a return to her roots. Originally from the Lehigh Valley and currently residing in Central Pennsylvania, Ruiz is a part-time student in the Special Education Ph.D. program, balancing graduate studies with her professional life.

Bridging Counseling and Special Education Ruiz' academic pursuits are informed by her career background in school counseling. Working on the frontlines of student support sparked her passion for inclusive education and shaped her current research focus: preparing school counselors to better support K-12 students with disabilities. By investigating how to equip counselors with the right tools and training, Ruiz aims to foster more inclusive, responsive school environments that serve the needs of every learner.

Why Lehigh? When she was selecting a doctoral program, Lehigh University’s College of Education (COE) stood out as the clear choice. Ruiz was drawn to the university by its prestigious academic reputation and the program's strong emphasis on developing high-level research skills.

Crucially, it was the people that solidified her decision. She specifically sought the opportunity to learn from and work alongside the COE's excellent faculty, viewing their mentorship as a vital component in advancing her academic and research interests.

Deep Ties to the Lehigh Valley Even while living in Central PA, Ruiz maintains a strong connection to her hometown region. When she steps away from her research, her favorite ways to unwind include walking the scenic trails at Jacobsburg State Park, whooshing down the slopes at Blue Mountain Ski Resort, and enjoying the historic charm of the Hotel Bethlehem on Main Street.

Above all, she cherishes the community’s rich local culture. Her favorite Lehigh Valley tradition? Gathering with her family every Thanksgiving to watch the historic Easton vs. Phillipsburg rivalry football game.

Through her dedication to student advocacy and her commitment to advancing research in her field, Ruiz is working to make a lasting impact on the future of school counseling and special education.

It was during her undergraduate years that she discovered a quiet but persistent passion for the transformative power of education. From designing curricula on environmental conservation to researching learning analytics, Khan realized how deeply pedagogy impacts real-world equity.

Now pursuing her M.Ed. in Teaching, Learning, and Technology, she has found a program that channels her drive for systemic change.
