Thomas Named May Institute’s Director of School Consultation

COE School Psychology alumna Lisa Thomas ’12 Ph.D., NCSP, LP, BCBA has been named May Institute’s Director of School Consultation in Philadelphia, Pa. and surrounding areas.

A national nonprofit organization that provides services for autistic individuals and individuals with other special needs, May Institute has offered consultation and professional development services to schools across Massachusetts and in other states for more than 30 years.

2024 Summer Institute in Bangkok Creates a Community of Learning

Each year, students from across the world gather for the COE’s two-week Global Programs Summer Institute. This year, masters and certificate students in the International School Counseling (INCO) and College Admissions Counseling programs gathered at Thammasat University in Bangkok. The 2024 Summer Institute saw the largest number of students attending so far, and the program’s first time in Asia.

One morning, not long ago, Dr. Craig Hochbein opened his email to find a message from Bob Steckel ‘20 Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools for Whitehall-Coplay. A graduate of the COE’s Educational Leadership program, Steckel had recently read the national bestseller, Unreasonable Hospitality. As Steckel moved through the book, he saw applications to educational leadership and thought of Hochbein. “I kept thinking that this is the book you wished was written for your classes,”  Steckel told his colleague.

Brook Sawyer Awarded Institute of Education Sciences Grant for Parents Plus en Español

Brook Sawyer was recently awarded a three-year Development and Innovation Research Grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). The nearly $2 million grant will facilitate Sawyer’s continued development and extension of her Parents Plus program, which also was funded by the IES.

Sawyer's program empowers Spanish-speaking parents to help their preschool children improve their language outcomes.

Adam Schmucker Builds Bridges Through Language

Adam Schmucker has always been interested in language and the world that exists outside our individual bubbles.

As part of his doctoral program, Schmucker is conducting research about the influence of school leadership on bilingual education. His multi-site, qualitative case study is taking place at three elementary schools in eastern Pennsylvania, conducting document analysis, semi-structured interviews and observational field observation.
