Kaelee Mackey: Coming Full Circle to Education
Kaelee Mackey’s journey to the classroom wasn't a straight line, but every step along the way brought valuable perspective. She began her undergraduate studies in education, then switched to psychology, and later completed a master’s in criminal justice. After working in various fields, she realized her true calling was education.
Coming back full circle to education, Mackey chose Lehigh University to advance her career. "Lehigh has such an incredible reputation for their teaching programs, and I knew that it was the perfect place for me," she shares. "I fell in love with teaching and helping students reach their goals, no matter what is thrown their way."
Hands-On Experience
Kaelee didn't just study special education. Hands-on teaching experiences, including her time serving as a one-on-one special education instructional assistant, working at a local YMCA summer camp, and training at the renowned Centennial School of Lehigh University, brought her study into practice.
Motivated to build warm, supportive classrooms, one of Mackey's most meaningful academic achievements at Lehigh was developing a comprehensive social-emotional inclusion lesson plan. By incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Assistive Technology (AT), she designed a curriculum capable of supporting and valuing learners at all developmental levels.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
The true measure of an educator is how they handle the unexpected. During her crucial student teaching semester, Mackey faced a serious hurdle when she suffered a major ankle injury. Rather than stepping back, she balanced a demanding recovery alongside her intense academic, professional, and personal commitments. Her ability to push through demonstrated the grit and dedication she hopes to inspire in her future students.
To stay grounded through life's fast-moving pieces, Kaelee looks to a favorite quote from One Tree Hill:
“It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re 17 and planning for someday, and then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today, and that someday is yesterday, and this is your life.”
For Mackey, these words serve as a daily reminder to stay present, appreciate how far she has come, and enjoy each moment of her teaching journey.
Off-Campus Favorites
When she isn't working on her lesson plans or teaching, Mackey enjoys visiting her favorite local spot to unwind and recharge? Jacqueline’s on Main in Coopersburg—which she highly recommends to anyone looking for an incredible brew.
Looking Ahead
Earning her master's degree this year, Mackey is ready to take on the world of special education. Her mission moving forward remains simple, powerful, and student-centered: to continue creating environments where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their highest potential.
