Lucy Norwood: Fast-Tracking a Career in Education

For sophomore Lucy Norwood, the decision to attend Lehigh University was deeply personal. Norwood grew up in Bethlehem and knew early on that her calling was in the classroom. When researching colleges, she looked for a university that could support her ambitions from day one. Norwood found that Lehigh's College of Education's 4+1 Accelerated Master's Education Program was a perfect fit, allowing her to dive into educational theory as an undergraduate before transitioning into her graduate teaching degree.

"I chose Lehigh because I absolutely loved the professors and the program opportunities I would have. I knew that I could explore education with the Learning Sciences Minor before applying to the 4+1, and I was so excited to learn all I could."

Mastering the "Why" Behind the "How"

To build a well-rounded foundation for her career in education, she paired her English major with a minor in Learning Sciences. For Norwood, being a great educator isn't just about knowing the subject matter—it's about understanding the psychological and motivational factors that drive human learning.

Already, she has completed coursework exploring the history of the United States school system and the science of personal motivation. This interdisciplinary approach equips her with the tools needed to design inclusive, supportive classroom spaces for all future students.

"I chose the minor because I knew it would help me understand why and how people learn, which would help me become a better educator. I appreciate the support of the COE professors... They’ve been uplifting and helpful in guiding me, whether it be with readings, homework, or advice on future research."

Academic Excellence & Community Care

Norwood's dedication to leadership and service shines brightly across the campus community. She was recently accepted into two of Lehigh's most prestigious academic groups: the Eckhardt Scholars, a select cohort of high-achieving, independent thinkers in the College of Arts and Sciences and TRAC Fellows, elite peer mentors trained to help fellow students improve their writing, communication, and analytical skills across disciplines.

True to her passion for teaching, Norwood also volunteers her time outside of class to tutor local elementary school students, putting educational theory into practice in the Bethlehem community.

Recharging in the "Christmas City"

When she steps away from her coursework and tutoring responsibilities, Norwood loves embracing the simple pleasures of her hometown. You can usually find her reading, listening to music, unwinding with a movie night alongside her friends, or playing with her cats.
