Rebecca Harten: Exploring the Intersection of Education and Psychology

Rebecca Harten always knew her career would center around supporting children. She began her undergraduate journey in education with plans to become a classroom teacher. However, as she delved into psychology and neuroscience coursework, she discovered an interest in psychological theories, human development, and behavioral research.

Looking for a way to merge her love for the school environments with her growing passion for psychological science, Harten discovered school psychology—the perfect avenue for her career aspirations. When she began her search for a graduate program to become an Education Specialist, Harten chose Lehigh's College of Education.

"Lehigh's COE offers a strong School Psychology program and was the right match for me and my goals. This program allows me to explore topics that interest me and develop the necessary skills for my future career."

Chosen for Community

The COE's School Psychology program stood out to Harten before she even enrolled. During her interview day on campus, she experienced a culture that set Lehigh's College of Education apart.

While learning about the academic strengths and high-impact work being conducted within the program, she was struck by the dynamics she witnessed between the faculty and graduate students. The environment wasn't fiercely competitive; instead, it was built on lifting each other up. She met a welcoming, deeply collaborative group of students, faculty and staff who were genuinely invested in seeing one another succeed. The strong, supportive relationships Harten saw during her interview have defined her experience as a graduate student.

Looking Towards the Future

As Harten navigates her second year of the Ed.S. program, she is busy honing the clinical, diagnostic, and consultative skills necessary to advocate for young learners.

After graduation, she plans to step straight into the public education system, where she hopes to work full-time within an elementary school setting. As a school psychologist, Harten aims to foster supportive learning environments, unlock student potential, and ensure that every child has the mental health and academic scaffolds they need to thrive.
