Melissa Gonzales: From Global Educator to Children's Author
With over 15 years of dedicated experience in global education, Melissa Gonzales’s career is defined by her deep love for diverse cultures and a calling to impact young lives. Melissa began her teaching journey in 2006 in Texas, where she specialized in inclusion, Pre-K, and primary education (Grades 2 and 3).
Driven by a desire to experience the world and expand her pedagogical perspective, she moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2016, teaching in both Al Ain and Dubai. Backed by a degree in Psychology alongside extensive studies in Sociology and Early Childhood Education, Melissa brings a profound understanding of human development to her current graduate studies in Lehigh’s International School Counseling program.
Cultivating Student Confidence and Self-Acceptance
For Melissa, education has always stretched beyond academic achievement. Her transition into school counseling aligns with her belief that emotional well-being is the foundation of all learning.
"Teaching is not just about academic learning; it’s about helping children recognize their uniqueness, build confidence, and develop self-love from an early early age."
As an educator and author, Gonzales seeks to create stories that inspire children to believe in themselves, reach for their dreams, and step into a future filled with self-acceptance.
From Classroom to Children's Author
Gonzales recently applied her counseling philosophy into a debut children’s book, I Love My Sloppy Squishy Face. The heartwarming story is designed as a tool for parents, educators, and counselors alike, celebrating kindness toward oneself and others, self-love and the celebration of personal identity, and embracing uniqueness to build early childhood resilience.
Bringing Lehigh's Impact to Thailand
Melissa’s work as a Lehigh graduate student and author recently took center stage globally. Following her participation in the College of Education’s Summer Institute program, Gonzales was featured as a special guest author at the Neilson Hayes Library in Bangkok, Thailand.
She hosted an exclusive "Story Time Special" for local families, featuring a live reading of her book with an international audience of young readers. Through her counseling studies at Lehigh and her outreach as a published author, Melissa continues to bridge the gap between mental wellness and early childhood education on a global scale.
