Thomas Named May Institute’s Director of School Consultation

COE School Psychology alumna Lisa Thomas ’12 Ph.D., NCSP, LP, BCBA has been named May Institute’s Director of School Consultation in Philadelphia, Pa. and surrounding areas.

A national nonprofit organization that provides services for autistic individuals and individuals with other special needs, May Institute has offered consultation and professional development services to schools across Massachusetts and in other states for more than 30 years.

Over her 25-year career in the education field, Dr. Thomas has implemented evidence-based interventions and services to school districts, state and county agencies, and other child organizations across 14 states, primarily in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

In her new position, Dr. Thomas and a team of May Institute consultants are collaborating with school staff members to assess and enhance educational programs for children and adolescents with diverse diagnoses and needs and co-occurring mental health disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and neurological disorders.

    Hermetet Advocates for People with TS

    Katrina Hermetet 15, Vice President of Medical & Scientific Affairs at the Tourette Association of America, contributed to an article that provides TLC viewers with valuable insights into Tourette Syndrome and tic disorders. It’s a resource designed to help audiences better understand what they’re seeing and foster greater understanding. Hermetet also makes an appearance in Episode 3 of “Baylen Out Loud” and provided medical advisory for all information about TS throughout the series.

    George Harmanos '73G is no stranger to the call of service. For more than four decades, he has dedicated his life to teaching, guiding young minds, and, after his retirement, taking on a new mission: helping the homeless in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His long career in education and deep commitment to those in need provide a shining example of service and leadership.

    Applying the Concepts of Unreasonable Hospitality to Educational Leadership

    One morning, not long ago, Dr. Craig Hochbein opened his email to find a message from Bob Steckel ‘20 Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools for Whitehall-Coplay. A graduate of the COE’s Educational Leadership program, Steckel had recently read the national bestseller, Unreasonable Hospitality. As Steckel moved through the book, he saw applications to educational leadership and thought of Hochbein. “I kept thinking that this is the book you wished was written for your classes,”  Steckel told his colleague.
