"What's Difficult about English Orthography?"
This presentation will discuss the difficulties of the English language and how reading and writing can be best taught. Taking cues from students' spelling errors, evidence will be considered that:
- the phoneme is elusive,
- phoneme-grapheme correspondences are
- predictable,
- pattern-based, and
- complex in English, and
- English is morphophonemic.
These special qualities of English require systematic, explicit, code-based reading and spelling instruction.
