College of Education Announces 2022 Holmes Scholars Cohort
Lehigh University’s College of Education is excited to announce the first cohort of Holmes Scholar students. The Holmes Scholars Program provides students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. with resources and professional development to best position them for tenure track faculty positions. Students, who self-identify as racially or ethinically diverse, apply to the program and are selected based on an active research agenda and excellent academic standing in their doctoral program.
Lehigh University's College of Education is a member of American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) and the Holmes Scholars Program, which is designed to support students who are enrolled in doctoral programs in education and from historically underrepresented communities.
Congratulations to all!
Meet the 2022 cohort below:
Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology
Amanda Rosado is a first generation Latina graduate student. Raised in New York, she earned her Bachelor's degree in psychology from St. John's University. She is a first year student in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program under the advisement of Dr. Susan Woodhouse.
“I chose to join the counseling psychology program here at Lehigh due to its strong emphasis on social justice, multiculturalism, and prevention which are values that are very important to me. I also chose this program because of the opportunity to participate in research in attachment styles and child development.”
Ph.D. in Educational Leadership
Antonio joined the Lehigh family in the summer of 2019 as a Language Specialist in the International Center for Academic and Professional English (ICAPE) and now serves as the inaugural Assistant Director of Diversity Initiatives in the Study Abroad Office. In addition to other duties in this current position, he manages the Passport to Success Program, which provides traditionally underrepresented students with support and encouragement to participate in a number of high impact learning experiences, as well as a free passport or renewal.
Prior to coming to Lehigh, Antonio spent sixteen years in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait teaching ESL at a number of universities and schools and several years before that teaching English in/around the Washington, D.C. area. Currently enrolled in the educational leadership doctoral program, he intends to focus his research on issues at the intersection of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI), international education and global citizenship- particularly in relation to Men of Color. On a personal note, Antonio is an unapologetic Star Wars nerd and would, one day, like to discover and seclude himself in a Jedi Temple.
The COE has a great reputation and the employee tuition benefit is even greater!
Ph.D. in School Psychology
Joey is a first-year doctoral student in School Psychology working with Dr. George DuPaul in the REACH (Research and Education for ADHD in Childhood Development) Lab. Her research interests include culturally responsive early interventions to support minoritized children with ADHD and their families, parent/teacher-child interaction, as well as understanding the role of social determinants of health in academic achievement.
She graduated with a B.S. in Psychology in 2021 and M.S. in Experimental Psychology in 2022 from Saint Joseph’s University. During my master's, I worked as a graduate research coordinator for the Behavior, Emotions, Development, and Sleep (BEDS) lab at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
“I chose Lehigh because of our strong academic program and distinguished faculty research. I am especially drawn to Lehigh’s incorporation of anti-racist and social justice framework into our curriculum. Our appreciation for multiculturalism and diversity is important to me as I picked a training program.”
Ph.D. in Special Education
Temi is a first-year doctoral student in the Special Education program at Lehigh University. She received both her undergraduate and Masters degree in Special education and worked as a Special education teacher in Nigeria for 7 years, educating a wide range of learners with special education needs in a variety of settings. She is interested in exploring reading intervention strategies for learners with learning and intellectual disabilities.
"Dr Lindström is my advisor and her work aligned perfectly with my work and interest and Lehigh offers a small faculty to student ratio with several opportunities for mentorship and guidance every step of the rigorous Ph.D. program."
Information about the Holmes Scholar program comes from the AACTE website and has been adapted in some cases for the Lehigh COE program.
