The Council for Equity and Community; Development and Alumni Relations; the Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Equity; Library and Technology Services; the Office of Multicultural Affairs; Student Affairs, and the Office of Student Engagement offered a forum on July 20, 2020 “Are We In This Together? A forum on transforming Lehigh into an antiracist institution.”
The fight itself can be a coping mechanism in the face of uncertainty and discrimination, says Germán Cadenas, PhD, a counseling psychologist at Lehigh University whose work focuses on the psychology of undocumented immigrants.
Germán A. Cadenas studies the link between the development of critical consciousness and Hispanic DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students’ intent to persist at public universities.
During a time of political unrest in his homeland of Venezuela, a young Germán Cadenas accompanied his mother and brother to Arizona, where his father was working to send money back home to support the family. “We came just to be with my father for Christmas,” he says. “We wanted to see him and be together.”
I wanted to reach out to share my reflections--solely my own--regarding the outrageous police attack in Minneapolis last week and the subsequent acts of protest that have ensued. I know that words are insufficient in a time of social unrest and yet as a community of scholars, words are what we have. I know that the College leadership will prepare a response as well but I wanted you to hear about this directly from me as well and with a sense of urgency that a joint letter in summer does not allow.
Lehigh University’s Counseling Psychology Program partnered with the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) in 2012 to create the Community Voices Clinic (CVC). CVC is a school-based mental health clinic where doctoral students coordinate training and supervise master’s students to provide therapy services to students in the schools and the Lehigh Valley community members.
